F.A.Q. - What is Socialization?

When is the best time to begin puppy training and socialization?

“The Primary and most important time for puppy socialization is the first three months of life. During this time puppies should be exposed to as many new people, animals, stimuli and environments as can be achieved safely and without causing over-stimulation manifested as excessive fear, withdrawal or avoidance behavior. For this reason, the American Veterinary Society of Animal Behavior believes that it should be the standard of care for puppies to receive such socialization before they are fully vaccinated.”

Why is socialization important?

Socialization, where puppies and dogs are exposed to different environments and social stimuli in a positive way, is crucial in promoting confidence. The sensitive time for socialization is approximately four to twelve weeks of age, and puppies between the ages of eight and ten weeks often experience what is known as the 'fear period.  It is paramount that puppies be socialized to a variety of people, experiences, sights, and sounds to give them confidence as adults.  Any negative life experiences that occur during this period can make a lasting impression for the rest of the dog’s life.
